Summer Camps

The Story School, Inc. is running two educational summer camps this year – a day camp as well as an overnight camp in Reading, MA (at Austin Preparatory School).

The first summer camp is called Zombie Summer Camp and is where campers create their own character in an ongoing storyline that never repeats. They choose special skills and their favorite NERF Blaster (provided or bring your own!). Then they decide what to do next when opportunity (or trouble) arises. Our heroes stand shoulder to shoulder with their fellow Defenders as they fight gruesome zombies, solve scientific mysteries, protect the fragile land, and forage for supplies. Each summer, the story line is based on either a literary piece (IE: George Orwell’s 1984) or an historical event (The Bubonic Plague) and involves education in science, creative problem solving, teamwork, and more.

Here is an example:

The second summer camp is called Wizards & Warriors Summer Camp and is the same concept as above, but has a medieval setting.  Heroes play wizards, warriors, or healers and spend the summer battling or negotiating with characters out of literature, history, or mythology.  They fight fierce monsters, uncover ancient mysteries, decipher scrolls (while learning Latin), make potions (while learning actual chemistry) and practice valuable skills in this dynamic learning adventure where stories are used to teach.

And another:

Parents & Guardians:  Take a moment and imagine how your child will feel when, in a moment of strife, they discover their courage…

When they stand before a villain and fight for those who cannot defend themselves…

When they speak for those who suffer from lack of a voice…

When they face failure and continue forward because they know, deep in their heart, that they can survive this setback and try again…

When they bond with other kids who feel the same call to action and desire to be greater than the moment before them…

When they celebrate their victory with an intense feeling of accomplishment – because they had a part in this story and they made a difference…

When they realize that learning is an intriguing, life long endeavor that is exciting to explore outside of the boundaries of school.

Your child is a hero. Give them the chance to prove it to themselves and you will see your child grow into the hero they want to be.

Because our stories are your child’s practice for real life.
